Americana Photography by Denise Tarantino

It would be best to let the site’s author and photographer describe the work featured here:  “The American Landscape is a magnificent backdrop; the blend of diversity both in its land and people provide for endless shouting. My images are built on the irony & humor found in kitschy roadside creations as well as capture the solemn found in the stillness & beauty of the vast typography within our country. The collection of photographs represented is the take-away from many ‘Americana’ road trips and station wagon vacations. […] Using a little planed serendipity as my guide I have a knack for finding the unusual. Large kitschy structures, self made monuments, decorative faux lawn animals and great roadside views are among my favorite subjects to shoot.  I try to envision the people who shaped the masterpieces I collect on film. I can only imagine that they are just as intriguing as structures they’ve created and as welcoming as the landscape in which it occupies.”

Health Map

Health Map

HealthMap brings together disparate data sources to achieve a unified and comprehensive view of the current global state of infectious diseases and their effect on human and animal health. This freely available Web site integrates outbreak data of varying reliability, ranging from news sources (such as Google News) to curated personal accounts (such as ProMED) to validated official alerts (such as World Health Organization). Through an automated text processing system, the data is aggregated by disease and displayed by location for user-friendly access to the original alert. HealthMap provides a jumping-off point for real-time information on emerging infectious diseases and has particular interest for public health officials and international travelers.

The site also contains a search function, the option to get the alerts from last week, or focus on specific issues like antibiotic resistance, Japan, polio, etc.
